Peterson Pits is an excellent nature area north of Ames. This scenic 200-acre area along the Skunk River Greenbelt has two areas, East & West Peterson Park. And it’s perfect for many outdoor endeavors, like swimming, boating, hiking, and more!
A Brief History of Peterson Pits
Thousands of years ago, sand and gravel from glaciers and ancient rivers settled in what is now the Skunk River valley.
As a result, the Peterson family’s land in the river valley became a sand and gravel quarry in the 1920s. It’s since been aptly called Peterson Pits.
In 1979, Story County Conservation bought the former quarry. And they soon turned it into a delightful spot for nature and outdoor activities.
Things To Do at Peterson Park

You can find the swimming beach at West Peterson Park, near a large parking area. Swim in designated areas; no lifeguard on duty.
Explore the trails
Over five miles of multi-use trails wind through the park, making it an excellent place for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross country skiing in the winter. The trails connect, so you can choose whether you want a short or long route. See the park map for details.
Go fishing
Great fishing options are abundant at Peterson Park! You can try your luck at the East or West Peterson ponds or the Skunk River. Anglers most commonly catch Bluegill, Catfish, and Largemouth Bass here.
